Teaching aims:
1. Know about the difference between American English and Canadian English
2. Practise in pairs telling the difference between two things or two countries.
3. Study the language points in this lesson
Teaching Procedures:
Step 1 Revision and warm up
T: Now boys and girls, we’ve learned English for nearly more than five years. In which countries in the world do the people speak English.
[ I collect the names of the countries, write them on the Bb, and practise their pronunciation, especially word stress]
England, Australia, New Zealand, America, Canada, and so on.
Step 2 Presentation
SB Page 37, Part 1.
T: In the world there are so many English-speaking Countries, but do you know in different countries, people don’t speak in the same way? So ,in this period, we are going to learn the different between American English and Canadian English. In today’s lesson, we are going to meet Dean, he’s Canadian, He is talking about Canadian English. Which of the following does he talk about: grammar, vocabulary, spelling or pronunciation?
Write these words on the Bb. Get the Ss to read the dialogue quickly and give you the answer.
(Vocabulary, Spelling, Pronunciation.)
Step 3 Reading
Get the Ss to read the dialogue silently. Ask them a few questions:
Is an American accent very different from a Canadian accent?
Do people have the same accent all over the country?
Step 4 Dialogue
Speech Cassette Lesson 25.
Play the tape of the dialogue for the Ss to listen and follow. Go through the dialogue briefly and make sure the Ss understand it. Explain generally speaking = in general. Play the tape again. This time the Ss listen and repeat. Then let the Ss practise the dialogue in pairs. I may wish to ask one pair to act the scene in front of the class.
Notes:
1. gas = (short for) gasoline
2. tap: the American English word is faucet
3. newspapers follow the American way
= newspapers use the spelling system of American English.
4. That sounds strange. You mean it looks strange: Dean corrects Fang Qun, because spelling is seen and not heard.
5. I’ll tell you something that does sound strange : does (強(qiáng)調(diào))
6. speak the same way = have the same accent, vocabulary and idiom
7. speak quite differently from the rest of Canada
= speak quite differently from people in the rest of Canada
Step 5 Oral practice
SB Page 37, Part 2
Get the Ss to practise the dialogue in pairs. Get them to read it with lots of expression and varied intonation. Get the Ss to cover the dialogue and look at the notes below. Do a demonstration of a dialogue with a good student. Then put the Ss to work in pairs. One of them plays the role of Dean and the other Fang Qun, Then change roles.
Step 6 Workbook
Wb Lesson 25, Exx. 2 and 3.
Make sure the Ss know the dialogue in SB Lesson 25,very well before they start doing Ex. 2. Let them work in pairs first. Then call out two Ss to read aloud the completed passage to the rest of class. Check the answers.
Tell the Ss what they should do with Ex. 3. Get them to work in pairs and then ask several pairs to read out their dialogues.
