I. Revision
Discuss cooking with the Ss. Ask Can you cook? What can you cook? Can you make jiaozi/spring rolls/pancakes?
II. Presentation
Tell the Ss this little story: Cooking can be dangerous. We must be careful. I’m cooking dinner. Here is my pan, and I put in some oil. Now I turn on the gas. Good. The oil is getting hotter and hotter. Then someone knocks at the door. I go to answer the door and I forget to turn off the gas. What is going to happen? (yes, the oil will catch fire.) What should I do?
III. Reading
Part 1. Read the introduction to the Ss. Say: Now read the dialogue silently and find out what Jenny tells Yang Pei to do. (First turn the gas off. Then cover the pan. Then wait until the fire is out).
IV. Dialogue
Play the tape of the dialogue for the Ss to listen and follow. Go through the dialogue briefly and make sure the Ss understand it. Play the tape again. This time the Ss listen and repeat. Then let the Ss practise the dialogue in pairs.
V. Reading
Part 2. Ask: What do you do if you discover a fire in this school? ( tell other Ss, tell a teacher, leave the building, etc). Then say: Look in your books. Here’s a notice in a hotel room. What three things does it tell you to do if you discover a fire? Tell the Ss the meaning of alarm and operator. Now ask the Ss to read the rest of the notice to find out what to do if they hear the fire alarm.

Should I stay in my room? (No.)
Should I leave the building at once? (yes)

Lesson 62 Sao Paulo Fire
I. Revision
1. Check the homework exercises.
2. Revise what to do in the different cases of fire mentioned in Lesson 61.
II. Presentation
Tell the Ss: Today we are going to read about a big fire in Sao Paulo, which is a city in Brazil. How many people died in this fire? Look at the headline. ( over 220). Read the passage quickly to find the answer to this question: How long did the fire last? (About four hours)
Why were so many people killed in this fire?
( There were no fire escapes; the smoke was too thick for helicopters to rescue the people on the roof; there were too many people in the street; the firefighters’ ladders were not long enough. )
Now please to read the paragraph carefully. And tell me about the building. ( Capital Building, Sao Paulo’s newest, 25 floors).
III. Reading
Ex. 1. Go through the exercise and make sure the Ss know what to do. Let them read the whole passage carefully and answer the questions, working in pairs or small groups. Check the answers with any language problems. See if the Ss can guess the meaning of new vocabulary.
