Useful Expressions
1. take along 隨身帶著 along (adv.)一起,一道
She always takes along a book in her pocket wherever she goes.
2. lose heart 灰心,氣餒,表失去信心
Don't lose heart. All will turn fine. 不要泄氣,一切都會好起來的。
I won't lose heart, even if I fail a hundred times. 即使失敗一百次,我也不會灰心。
3. in the hope of (in hopes of, in the hope that) 懷著對…的希望
People rushed to Canifolia in the hope of finding gold during the Gold Rush. They searched the whole forest in the hope of finding that lost child. 他們搜遍了森林,希望找到失蹤的孩子。
4. in this way 以這種方式、用這種方法

Sentence Patterns
1. Go through the gate and you’ll find the entrance to Bear Country on the other side. 穿過大門,你就可以在門那邊找到通往熊國的入口了。
祈使句+and主謂句,這種句子含義相當于if引導的條件句+結果句。上述句子可改為:If you go through the gate, you’ll find the entrance to Bear Country on the other side. 又如:Study hard and you will pass the exam. 努力學習你就會通過考試。Have a look and you'll know what it is. 看一眼,你就知道那是什么。Use your head and you’ll find a way. 如果動動腦子,你就會想出辦法來。 Keep on trying, and you’ll succeed. 如果你不斷努力,你就會成功。該句型還可用or表達。or表示“否則”,從反面來預測一個結果。Hurry up or you'll be late for school.等于If you don't hurry up, you will be late for school.
2. We don't think there is anything of interest in your pictures.
of+由形容詞轉化的抽象名詞,相當于形容詞。something of interest = something interesting; a matter of importance = an important matter 又如:The meeting is of importance. = important ; The book is of no use. = useless
在高一我們學過“轉移否定”: I don’t think you have met Professor Johnson. I don’t believe his new idea is correct.
Language tips
1. Go straight ahead till you see the entrance. 掌握ahead的用法與搭配:
The road ahead was blocked by a big fallen tree. Ahead of us is the Sleeping Beauty Castle. The new building was finished three months ahead of time.
2. Go through the gate and you'll find the entrance to Bear Country on the other side.
the entrance to …意為“…的入口”,這里to是考點: Let’s meet at the entrance to the cinema.
類似的表達還有:a key to...(...的鑰匙): I've lost the key to the door. ;the answer to...(...的答案);the invitation to...(...的邀請):Have you received the invitation to the ball? 你收到舞會的邀請了嗎?
3. Go down this street till you get to the clock tower. Then you'll see the sign for the rest rooms. 從這條街一直走到鐘樓,你就可以看到廁所的牌子了。掌握sign的用法與搭配:
Haven’t you seen the sign saying “No Smoking”? Dark clouds are a sign of rain. sign 動詞的意思:He signed his name at the bottom of the letter. The policeman signed (for) them to stop.

join the line 在這里是“排隊”的意思, line 就是“隊伍”。 掌握有關排隊的說法:排隊上車to line up for the bus; 排隊買票 line up to buy tickets站隊 stand in line 插隊 jump the line
5. 歸納用英語Asking Directions (問路)的方法。
Excuse me. Can you tell me the way to the railway station? How can I get to …? Where is…? Where is the nearest bus stop ? Which is the way to…?

Go straight ahead till you see… Just take this street round to … Go down this street till you get to… Go through the gate and you will find the entrance to… It’s about…yards/metres down this street.
7. Disney's greatest wish was to be a famous artist. 迪斯尼最大的愿望就是成為一位著名的藝術家。
在wish, plan, idea 等名詞后常用不定式做表語,以表示未來的動作或狀態(tài)。My wish is to be a cartoon maker.
8. Disney's friends tried to encourage him. 迪斯尼的朋友們盡力鼓勵他。掌握encourage的用法與搭配:The teacher encouraged the children to study on their own. They are encouraged to speak out their opinions. Several weeks passed, she hadn’t received any encouraging news. 令人鼓舞的消息
9. Disney stopped drawing and watched the mouse.
stop doing sth.表示停下手中的這件事(此動作將停止),比如本句,迪斯尼停止畫畫,而去觀察老鼠。stop to do sth.表示停下(手中的事情)去做另外一件事,如:We stopped to have a rest. 我們停下來休息一下。
10. Day after day the mouse came back and was given more bread. 老鼠天天回來,迪斯尼給它更多的面包。Day after day he experimented and drew different pictures of the mouse that he had known. 日復一日,他反復嘗試,畫他所熟悉的那只老鼠,畫了一幅幅不同的圖畫。
注意區(qū)分day after day 和 day by day:
Day after day they did the same thing in the factory. The number of the college students is increasing year by year.
11. He picked up his pencil and started to draw.
pick up 拿起、拾起,如:I picked up the book from the floor. 我從地上拾起書。在口語中pick up還可是“買東西”:Please pick up something for dinner on your way home. 回家的路上順便買些晚上吃的東西。
12. At last he was pleased with one of his pictures of the mouse. 最后,他對自己所畫的其中一幅老鼠畫感到滿意。
be pleased/ satisfied with …對…感到滿意:My brother is very pleased with his new job. 我哥哥對他的新工作很滿意。
13. He tried to get work as an artist, but still he was unsuccessful. 他努力找到一份藝術家干的工作,但仍然沒有成功。Disney's success as a cartoon-maker had begun. 作為一位卡通片制作者,迪斯尼開始成功了。
區(qū)分succeed、success、successful:He succeeded in getting a job. Hard work leads to success. She was successful in business.
14. He soon drew other cartoon characters like Donald Duck and during the 1920s and the 1930s he made scores of cartoons about them. 不久他又畫了其他如唐老鴨之類的卡通片人物,并在20世紀20年代至30年代期間制作了許多關于米老鼠和唐老鴨的卡通片。
score除了作“分數(shù)”解外,還有一個意思就是twenty, 所以二十人就是a score of people 有時score沒有確指數(shù)目,scores of 相當于“幾十個”,“許多”。如:I've been there scores of time.我常去那里。
15. Before the days of television, they used to be shown in cinemas all over the country before the main film was shown. 在電視時代了現(xiàn)之前,全國的電影院以前常常先放映這些卡通片,然后才放映主片。
used to do sth.意思是“過去常常做某事”,如:He used to get up very late. 他過去經(jīng)常晚起。與其容易混淆的詞組為:be used to doing sth.“習慣做某事”, 和be used to do sth.“被用來做某事”,如:I am used to living here. 我習慣于住在這里。Bamboo can be used to make paper. 竹子可以用來造紙。
16. All the Disney parks are operated by the same company. 所有這些迪斯尼樂園均由同一家公司經(jīng)營。
掌握operate和operation的用法與搭配: All the Disney parks are operated by the same company. It’s not difficult to operate that machine. The doctor decided to operate on him at once. The operation of a new machine can be hard to learn.
17. The workers have very strict orders. 工作人員得嚴格遵守規(guī)章制度。
熟記:obey orders 遵守規(guī)章制度;take orders 接受命令;give orders 下命令;keep order 維持秩序
18. The parks are the cleanest parks that you can imagine. 這些公園是你可以想象的最干凈的公園。
掌握imagine的用法與搭配: He imagines that people don't like him but they do. You can't imagine what a terrible week we had. It's hard to imagine working in a place like that.

掌握as far as的用法與搭配: 直到…(為止) He walked as far as the village where I lived. 就我所知 As/So far as I know, he is still working there.
