        UNIT 5 THE SILVER SCREEN

        Teaching Aims:

        1. Train the Ss’ listening ability.

        2. Train the Ss’ speaking ability.

        Talk about films and famous actors and directors

        How to improve the Ss’ speaking ability.

        Teaching Methods:

        1. Listening and answer activity to help the Ss go through with

        the listening text.

        3. Some VCD disks

        Teaching procedures:

        Step I. Greetings & preparation

        1.Greet the whole class as usual.

        2.Teach the students useful terms of film:

        actors, actress, director, script, scene, performance, science, fiction film, action film, love film, documentary film, cartoon, horror film, historical film, warfare film, comedy, tragedy, play the part of

        Step II. Warming up

        T: Do you like watching films? And how often? What do you know about films?

        (Ask some students something about their favourite films)

        T: Then you must know some famous directors and film stars; I think .Can you tell the class who they are?

        (Show some pictures about the directors and film stars from China, and teach the words ‘director’, ‘a(chǎn)ctor’ and ‘a(chǎn)ctress’)

        T: All the people you see are from China. Do you know some famous directors, actors and actresses in other countries?

        T: perhaps we are not very familiar with the directors, actors and actresses in foreign countries, but we know some of the foreign films. Please look at the pictures on page 29. They are taken from four famous films. Can you guess their names? You can say them either in English or in Chinese.

        Picture1. Bicentennial Man 機器管家

        A young girl with a tall half-man walks along the beach. The half human looks like a robot, carrying a few large pieces of wood.

        T: Why do they carry the wood? What can they use for? What happened before and what will happen later?

        T: Maybe they use it for making a boat. Before there was a boat broken down by strong winds in the sea. So they picked up wood to make a boat and then the girl led the half-man to her house.

        Picture2. Jurassic Park 侏羅紀(jì)公園

        It seems the dinosaur has not yet seen the two men below the dinosaur. Before the scene, maybe a dinosaur escaped from the park in a rainy and stormy day; it was hungry and tried to hunt the two men for food.

        What do you think the end will be like?

        Later, the two men may be caught and eaten by the dinosaur; or may they will escape from the dinosaur.

        Picture3. Mulan 木蘭

        This is a scene from a famous animation based on a folk legend story in China. In the picture, three men are talking; perhaps they are discussing a war because there is a map, on which there are many small flags. Before this scene, they may have dinner for people like talking things after meals. After that they may win the war or they fail in the war for their plan may be released by a spy.

        Picture4. Hero 英雄

        The woman named Flying Snowflakes in the film Hero is flying towards a man with her sword pointing at the man named Incomplete Sword and attacking him. This is a classical scene in the film Hero. What do you know about the relationship between the man and the woman?

        T: They are lovers in fact and both of them are swordsmen who intended to murder Qin Shihuang. Before the scene, they had a conversation and had conflicts over the murder. So the woman began to attack the man. But since they are lovers, I think the woman won’t kill the man but hurt him.

        Step III. Listening

        T: Of course these films now are very popular and successful, and what does the success of the films bring to the actors?

        Ss: Money, honor, repute and etc. And they will become very famous, and they will receive a lot of interviews.

        T: Now let’s listen a interview. First you should read the five questions in your books.

        (Teacher gives Ss one or two minute to read the questions and then plays the tape for Ss.)

        T: Now let’s listen to the tape from the beginning to the end to get a general idea.

        (Teacher plays the tape for the first time. Then teacher plays the tape for the second time. Teacher may pause for students to write down the information. Finally teacher checks the answers with the whole class. And let Ss listen one more time if necessary.)

        Step IV. Speaking

        T: Now here is the CCTV ‘people in the news’, today Meryl Streep and Keanu Reeves come to our studio. Welcome!

        S: Welcome!

        T: OK. Now Team 1 and Team 3 play the role of Meryl Streep, Team 2 and Team 4 play the reporter, Team 5 and Team 7 play the role of Keanu Reeves biography of Keanu Reeves. Team 6 and Team 8 play the reporter. Then interview each other using the information in the short biographies. Please look at the screen.

        T: Do you understand me?

        S: Yes.

        T: OK. You can begin your interview. I’ll show on the screen some sentences for you to use if you like.

        (Show the following on the screen.)

        (Teacher gives Ss enough time to prepare, then asks students to act out the interview before the class. If time permit ,Ss may act some more dialogues about themselves.)

        Step V. Summary and Homework

        T: In this class we’ve done some listening and speaking. We’ve also talked about some films and some famous directors, actors and actresses. After class, you can talk about other films that you are familiar with. Certainly you should talk about them in English.

        Step VI . Homework

        1. Review and practise the useful terms and expression about films

        2. Preview the reading material “Getting to know Steven Spielberg”.
