        Language focus:

        Using adverbs to express manner

        e.g. Let’s go to the aviary quickly

        Using the present continuous tense to describe an action taking place at the time of speaking

        e.g. That toucan is singing loudly

        Pre-task preparation

        1 Introduce: pelican and toucan. Ask: Do you know these birds? Ask the students to guess where they can see these birds.

        2 Ask: What do these birds eat? Ask the students to find out the answers in the story.

        3 Play the recording: Look and learn. Students listen and follow in their books.

        4 Play the recording: Look and read. Students listen and follow in their books.

        5 Play the recording again. Students listen and repeat.

        6 Invite one student to come out and demonstrate what the four adverbs mean, e.g. Walk quickly./Walk slowly./Shout loudly./Come in quietly.

        Now listen!

        Distribute a copy of Photocopiable page 121 to each student. Students are required to listen to the recording first. Then they need to complete the caption for each photograph which Alice has sent to Uncle Jack.

        2 Play a game: Do the opposites

        Have 4-5 students come out. Hold up the command cards for them to see. To win the game, students need to do the opposites and ignore the orders, e.g. Walk slowly. (Student should walk quickly.)/Walk loudly. (Students should walk quietly.) After several rounds, the students can take turns to give orders.
