Asking ‘Wh-‘ questions to find out a person's occupation

e.g. What job does Ben's father do?

Asking 'Wh-' questions to find out the reason

        e.g. Why?

Asking simple questions to obtain 'yes/no' responses

e.g. Do you like your job?

Using ‘like to’ to express interests, feelings and opinions

e.g. I like to teach children.

        Pre-task preparation

1 Give the students some time to read the dialogues and study the two photographs in Read and say. Ask: What can you see in the photographs? Who are they? to elicit: A policeman and a teacher. They are Mr and Mrs Li.

2 Ask the students to read the modelled dialogues in Read and say. Students then work in pairs to complete the dialogues. Ask them to use the information in Think and write.

3 Ask the intermediate or less able students to do the role-play. One acts as Ben and the other acts as Mrs Li.

4 Ask the students to complete the table in Think and write. Students can find relevant information on page 18 of the Student's Book.

5 Invite the more able students to act as Ben and Mr Li. Remind them to use the modelled dialogues to do the role-play.

        While-task procedure

1 Distribute a copy of Pitotocopiable page 29 to each student. This is an information sheet to help students complete the survey form in A survey. Go over the different jobs with the students.

2 Distribute a copy of Photocopiable page 30 to each student. Ask the students to do a survey about the jobs of their partners' parents. Divide the students into pairs. Students use the modelled dialogues in A survey to get the relevant information from each other.

3 Invite some students to report back using their completed survey form.
